Review of The Counselor (2013) by Eric W — 02 Mar 2014
Yes, I gave this film a perfect rating. I have no shame in admitting that I absolutely loved The Counselor despite the terrible response it received from critics and moviegoers alike who proclaimed it to be one of the worst and most disappointing films of 2013.
Make no mistake, The Counselor is a very messy film that features a plot that can be convoluted, characters who have long-winded conversations about all sorts of things (Like Javier Bardem's character talking about how his girlfriend played by Cameron Diaz literally fucked his car), shameless sexual content, gratuitous violence, drug use, lots of swearing, and it even feels like it belongs in a different time period, namely the 70's.
Despite these flaws I should be complaining about, I couldn't hate this film at all even with those flaws. I loved every minute of this weird film because it reminds me of those trashy exploitation films of the 70's and 80's.
The Counselor is an exercise in indulgence and excess, and then given a glossy sheen and a talented cast. This film is a trashy, violent, sexual, very talkative, drug-ridden crime fantasy that does whatever the fuck it wants to do and I had an absolute blast with it.
The Counselor is set to go down as one of my greatest pleasures and one of the best trashy exploitation films I've ever seen. It has its notorious reputation for good reasons, so I wouldn't recommend it to most people.
Still, like I said, I have no shame in giving this film a perfect rating because it is one of the weirdest, most fascinating, most self-indulgent, most nonsensical, and ridiculously entertaining films I've seen.
I fucking love this film to death because of those reasons.
