Review of The Counselor (2013) by Matt D — 13 Mar 2014
What a strange movie this is. Let me count its shortcomings:
Cameron Diaz is woefully miscast.
Our main character in Michael Fassbender is so devoid of backstory and detail that it's impossible to give two shits about him until the movie is half over and even then it's only because the woman (Penelope Cruz) we're meant to think he adores is in danger.
Brad Pitt's character exists because...I don't know...I guess we needed to see someone else get killed.
Javier Bardem has a few great lines but is also devoid of getting our sympathy.
In all, this is a movie so unfocused that we watch it without almost any emotional stake in the plot. Sometimes that can work if the characters are interesting enough to just watch and observe but that's not even close to being the case here.
Ridley Scott really missed the boat on this one.
