The best, most emotionally resonant, and discomforting depiction of the Faustian pact for the 21st century. Fassbender's suffering is ours for those prepared to forego their vanity, or those not suffering from the delusion of being morally unimpeachable.

The stakes are dramatically high, the consequences horrific, and the 'innocent' suffer for the sins of our complicit 'counselor', but there's still a root simplicity to the story and the eternality of its theme.

For all it's Ridley Scott beauty and visual extravagance, and Cormac McCarthy's elliptical prose, there's an enduring raw truth to its tale of human frailty. Overall, a hugely impressive film from the British auteur.
