Review of The Counselor (2013) by Matthew A — 01 Jun 2014
Powerful and intense! Honestly the two hours flew by, incredible. The cast was stellar especially Diaz, Bardem and Pitt. Oh man greed can be a dangerous vice. Bravo to the cast and crew of The Counselor, directed by none other than Ridley Scott (Alien).
Fassbender plays the role of the Counselor, a rich and respected attorney that decides to get involved in drug trafficking with the help of Reiner (Bardem) and Westray (Pitt) as the middleman. Excited over the potential profit he can make over this drug trade he asks his girlfriend Laura (P.
Cruz) to marry him. Initially all seems good until the drug deal goes south and I can assure you that heads will roll. The film opens with the Counselor and Laura in bed together after what is supposed to be a marathon lovemaking session- so pleasant! Loved the first 20 minutes but then the film takes a very dark turn.
.Pay attention to the dialogue especially between the counselor and Reiner and Westray. Some decisions end up costing you the lives of loved ones and close friends and you cannot fix it no matter what.
..I thank the director for choosing NOT to show the death of Laura (snuff films make me very uncomfortable). I cannot disclose anymore but believe me when I say, this journey ends in tragedy and the counselor will wish he could turn back time.
Its a dark, uneasy film in the last 35 minutes and if you think women are not as evil as men, oh man you have not met Malkina (Cameron Diaz). Definitely recommended!!!
