Review of The Counselor (2013) by Ben V — 13 Aug 2014
Usually two tell tale signs that a movie isn't really good before watching it are an A-List cast and Director. 99% of the time Allstar cast and Director = bad movie (Skyfall being one of the only recent exceptions).
The second tell tale sign is despite the crazy cast, no one even knowing the movie existed. That is the case with The Counselor... Directed by Ridley Scott and starring... ready for this, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem & Brad Pitt it follows a lawyer (Fassbender) only known as "The Counselor" as he enters the drug world thinking it's easy money with no consequences.
.. Only it's the opposite, when there's a huge screw up... While this sounds like a recipe for a great enthralling movie, unfortunately the writing is so formula driven, that it takes you out of the movie.
If someone were to take a very well written book that was like 500 pages and then condense it into a 90 minute film, that's what this film feels like... While there are moments in the film that are brilliant, the overall feeling of the film leaves you very unfulfilled.
.. Semi recommended as long as you don't have high expectations based off of cast and director.
