Please, somebody tell me HOW, with this power-house cast, director, and writer, a movie could go so terribly, horribly and ridiculously wrong? I'm just stunned by it. I suppose it all starts with the script, which is, in a word, godawful.
Everything else spirals down from there. The dialogue is especially terrible, even these great actors can't do anything to make the it believable. Then there's the story... which might have been interesting if the filmmakers had even attempted to make it comprehensible.
The film is incredibly unfocused, I could never quite figure out where it was supposed to be going. I've never seen a movie that is so packed with exposition and yet so utterly unfollowable. The point of exposition is to EXPLAIN THE PLOT, but after all the talk going on in this movie, I still couldn't figure out what the hell was going on.
The only good things about this movie are that it's sharp-looking and has a consistent "noir-ish" tone, which made the movie look and feel a lot better than it is. But I'm reaching to find even that one plus in the sea of minuses that is this movie.
I really like a lot of Ridley Scott's films, but he tends to be hit or miss, and this one was a big miss.
