Review of The Counselor (2013) by James R — 10 Jan 2015
I was actually kinda mixed on this one. When I had first heard about The Counselor I thought it looked good. How could you go wrong with such a great ensemble? Critics absolutely destroyed this movie and there's a lot of value to what has been said, but I was still entertained.
The Counselor (Michael Fassbender) is a lawyer that is in over his head. He has just proposed to his girlfriend Laura (Penelope Cruz) and gone into a business partnership opening a club with a notorious drug smuggler named Reiner (Javier Bardem).
Counselor agrees with Westray (Brad Pitt) a sort of drug guru and smuggler himself to help Reiner move cocaine across the border and resell it making a ton of profit. Meanwhile Reiners wife Malkina (Cameron Diaz) has plans of her own.
The films plot is kind of all over the place. As confusing as my summary might have been it flows together in a decent manner. Really overall though the film doesn't exactly do a great job of character development.
Although, Fassbender is a great actor his role as Counselor is a little dry. On top of that the ending to me wasn't too satisfying. It ends and it seems like there was suppose to be at least another 15 minutes or so.
So what I would say is this is a rent for anyone interested, but definitely not a film that everyone will "get.".
