Review of The Cotton Club (1984) by Gordon S — 07 Jan 2008
I've been wanting to see this one for a while, and since I've been working on a "gangsters and molls" musical, the time was ripe. The main problem I had was editing and continuity--some scenes cut and jumped rather than flowed, and I'll usually go along with anything, so if I notice a problem with continuity, it's egregious.
How lovely to see Gregory Hines so young and lovesick, Larry Fishburne so powerful without relying on bulk, Diane Lane without all her concommittant baggage, and who knew Jennifer Grey was even in it? I liked the upstairs/downstairs motif of race relations, and the tricky negotiations that Dixie and Angelina had in negotiating between both worlds.
