Review of The Core (2003) by Jonathan Y — 01 Dec 2008
Just cheesy enough to be ridiculous, just slick enough to be compelling, and just savvy enough to make you think the whole thing is probably just one big put-on, Jon Amiel's 'The Core' is one of those enjoyable junk food movies that's fun either as deliberate or unintentional camp.
.. doesn't matter which. The central premise, for instance, is both ingenious and laughable, a voyage to the mysterious center of the earth (in all its molten, crystalline glory) that hinges on some truly ridiculous coincidences that would probably have been laughed out of a beginning screenwriting class.
Ultimately, it may not be a particularly good movie, but it's still pretty entertaining in spite of (or because of) it.
