What let the core down was 2 fold realy 1 timing and 2 not terrible reconised actors.
Comming on the back end of "lets go into sppace and blow up that astroid" crase the core looked down for its answer and found it. Personally speaking I enjoyed it and repeat viewings have filled in a few blanks.
That said it will never be on a par with say Amageddon or Deep Impact but it wasnt up there..
