Review of The Cooler (2003) by David L — 10 Dec 2007
My kind of romance movie. It's dark, twisted, cool, and sweet. The movie plays off Las Vegas legends and mythos of coolers, con-artists, and Lady Luck, adding all the swing of a great lounge act but with a dark sadness to it all.
William H. Macy plays the biggest loser of his career who's so unlucky that his bad luck is contagious. However, Maria Bello plays Macy's Lady Luck and brings happiness to his sad existence. As a couple trapped by a manipulative Alec Baldwin in Las Vegas, Macy and Bello complement each other well with each other's sadness.
But Baldwin's the one who really steals the show because as villainous he is, he skillfully makes his character to be sympathetic in the end. Some of the movie might be hard to buy with its magical quality and set-ups, but look past those and there's a solid love story here.
