Review of The Cooler (2003) by Ray D — 10 May 2008
The Cooler is a strange little character-driven Vegas film that works best if you watch it as a combination of Fable and Superhero movie where William H. Macy has one of the more interesting superpowers out there---he radiates unluckiness.
He's unlucky, people around him become unlucky, and Alec Baldwin (perhaps not figuring this out) hires him to work for his casino. Of course, William H. Macy doesn't want to be unlucky, and his attempts to overcome his superpower, and change his life, spurred by a mysterious woman (Maria Bello, strong as always) who may or may not be into him.
Alec Baldwin was deservedly given an Oscar Nomination for his role as the Casino Owner who hates what Vegas is becoming, but can't stop it--or himself. An interesting little Fable for grown-ups.
