Review of The Cooler (2003) by Cory B — 25 Oct 2008
An excellent Vegas love story buoyed by exceptional performances by all and flawless direction from Wayne Kramer, the director of a personal favorite of mine, Running Scared. When has William H. Macy not played a sad-sack loser? In this, he probably plays his best sad sack (I'm sorry, nothing top Boogie Nights).
Baldwin is amazing as well. In an argument, the person that yells the loudest usual wins, and that is the case with Alec. He was quoted as saying he completely stole his character from Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.
Whatever works; he got an Oscar nod for it. The premise doesn't appear hokey due to the way they stage the film. It feels film-noir at points, at others it's comedic, and sometimes its brutal and menacing.
It was almost rated NC-17 due to a sex scene where pubes were visible. And don't forget seeing Macy's ass. Also, reminded me a lot of Hard Eight. Overall, one of the best gambling/love in Vegas I've ever seen.
