Review of The Cooler (2003) by Tammie K — 16 May 2011
So, don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Alec Baldwin on "30 Rock", and I'm pretty keen on Maria Bello (Grown Ups), but this movie didn't do either of them any favors. However, the most detrimental aspect of the movie has to be William H.
Macy (Thank You for Smoking). He's not a good lead man. He's too shallow, too bland, and too uncharismatic to carry a film. At first, the lovable loser thing works, but the plot runs thin pretty quick.
Baldwin plays against type, but doesn't really elevate the Vegas casino boss to a Robert De Niro in 'Casino' level. It's got its humorous moments, and the end catches you a little off guard, but it's not really one worth writing home about.
