Review of The Cooler (2003) by Robert M — 28 Apr 2004
KILL BILL VOL.2--what a joy to see Gordon Liu, The Master Killer, as an old master.
THE COOLER--William H. Macy gets his freak on with Maria Bello! I enjoyed this movie a great deal. Alec Baldwin is great as an old school casino man who refuses to change with the times. He kills, beats, and threatens people in order to keep his casino "pure." Macy is Lootz, the cooler, a guy whose perpetual bad luck keeps the casino from losing money, at least until Lootz falls in love...
THE LADYKILLERS--what a disappointment. I can appreciate comedies with foul language just as much as the next guy, but Wayans's cursing and getting slapped around by an old woman cannot sustain a 90 minute film. I thought it was just OK, and that's terrible when you consider it's a Coen's film.
LOST IN TRANSLATION--felt a definite connection to this film. I feel lost myself most days; just completely cut off from everything and everyone around me. Bill Murray was wonderful...when isn't he?
BIG FISH--good movie, beautiful to look at, but I felt nothing...
