Review of The Cooler (2003) by Rich B — 15 Feb 2005
The Cooler (2003) - "Let me tell you something, 'Harvard.' Come upstairs with me in my office, watch and learn how to protect your investments the old-fashioned way." - Shelly.
Bernie (William H. Harvey) is a cooler. His job is to suck the luck out of gamblers. He's a roll killer. He's a black hole of depression. He's a cooler. All he has to do is show up at a table and anyone's roll dies right there. But he's just about settled his debt to his boss, Shelly (Alec Baldwin) the manager of Shangri-La, a casino that's bucked the tide of family-based mega-casinos. And Shelly is worried.
Its a dark movie, filled with people who ruthlessly protect their business; characters you wouldn't consciously come within a hundred feet of. The story will cause you to pause before stepping into your next casino. The bluesy soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the screenplay.
