Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Quecuatzl K — 26 Mar 2008
Probably Peter Greenaways most um, accessible (which is hard to believe). Yes it's an allegory about Thatcherism but beyond that decades later there is so much going on in every frame that it stands as an achievement in filmmaking.
Perhaps Greenaway and everyone involved was so disgusted with the state of affairs it forced them to take risks anyone otherwise wouldn't think of. One of the most beautiful yet UGLY films ever made.
The photography makes me hard.
