Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Tom P — 27 Sep 2009
I first watched this movie about 10 years ago, but I don't recall it being quite so difficult to watch as I did this time round. And I don't just mean because of the excessive screen time given to Helen Mirren's wobbly and furry bits.
On the plus side: British sex scenes, stella performances by most of the cast, as well as stylish cinematography. On the downside: an awful soundtrack which seems to have been chosen to best dissuade the audience from enjoying the film; cannibalistic toasted coq is not to everyone's taste; and it's aged badly.
But all in: worth watching once. Before dinner.
