Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Buddy K — 10 Jul 2011
Without question one of the....struggling for words...films i've ever seen. The motives of the film are somewhat unclear, is it an attack on Thatcher era England? Hatred of modern day society? Or is Peter Greenaway just a cynical prick? Either way this a rare film.
Greenaway constantly reminds the viewer you're watching a film by playing with set decorations, lighting and costumes to reflect a mood even outfits change color from room to room. Its a bizarre experiment but it works.
The character of Spica and the violence and mayhem he creates will cause most to hate the film which is about right. Michael Gambon has always been a fine actor in my book but his performance completely threw me for a loop and made re-access his entire career.
How he tackles this truly vile son of a bitch is shocking. Can't recommend the film but if any film lover thinks movies nowadays are too tame check this out, its currently on Netflix Instant Watch.
