Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Luis O — 06 Sep 2012
I would call this Greenaway's one of his great masterpieces. The lovely Helen Mirren obscures Gabon's performance. Yes, I too was shocked in 1989 when it first came out, but I loved the cinematography.
It was at the same time that a great restaurant in Los Angeles came to be and it resembled the ambiance of the restaurant portrayed in the film. I recently attended a celebratory dinner at this nameless restaurant and after two decades of decadence it still holds it's own candle after new renovations.
How many restaurants in LA can say that? After all most of them fail after 6 moths, but I digress. A great film, that I had not seen in decades and it still holds you by the neck and shakes the living lights out of you.
