Review of The Conversation (1974) by Sean C — 15 Apr 2008
Part 1 of my 'Francis Ford Coppola: what have you become' series.
I realised before I watched this film that i've had the misfortune of probably seeing more bad FFC films than I have good ones (Jack and Dracula spring to mind), so it was really cool that this film didn't disappoint.
Gene HACK-MAN is amazing as Harry Caul, a character who is almost the opposite to the brash, in your face, badassery of Popeye Doyle in French Connection, which was great because I haven't seen that many of Gene HACK-MAN's films either. Also the soundtrack was just fantastic and watch out for the uncredited cameo of Robert DuVall and a young Han Sol...Harrison Ford.
Looking back on Coppola's small body of work in the 70's, it's hard to believe he crafted 4 such perfect films when most directors would kill to have made just one of them and it's breaking my heart as I read that he's now producing a remake of this film.
