Review of The Conversation (1974) by Kerwin K — 15 Jun 2008
When I watched this film in college I instantly elevated it to one of my top 10 favorites. Walter Murch is one of the most talented sound editors in the history of cinema and Bill Butler's cinematography is noteworthy. 10 years ago I was drawn into the story of a paranoid man driven further into it.
That is, until last week. It's been at least 7, if not more, years since I watched "The Conversation". In that time my focus as a film lover has gravitated more towards storytelling and character development. Something this film lacked. For instance, Gene Hackman's character states early in the film that he doesn't become involved in the content of his targets. So why does he become interested in this particular job? Not adequately answered in the film.
Technically I still applaud this film. But in terms of overall cinematic quality, below average.
