Review of The Conversation (1974) by Ivan D — 05 Apr 2010
This is an enduring proof how prolific a filmmaker Coppola really was in the 70's, able to create this film and "The Godfather part II" in the same year. Another proof that has arisen out of this haunting film is Gene Hackman's talent.
His complex performance in this film can rank as one of the best I've seen, completely ripping off his tough guy, unshakable persona and turning it into a vulnerable, helpless surveillance expert.
To reveal any elements of the plot is a cinephilic sin, and no doubt why IMDb had such a short plot summary of the film. Apart from "The Conversation" being a very masterful practice of paranoid filmmaking, it is also a cautionary tale for the voyeuristic ears, and how eavesdropping can turn into a conscientious responsibility.
