Review of The Conversation (1974) by Matthew C — 16 Jul 2010
Gene Hackman plays a seriously damaged human being who has devoted his life to the art of surveillance for money. Paranoia and suspicion rule in this quiet, somewhat pensive film. Lots of really good supporting performances help, but Hackman is excellent as the subdued, vaguely creepy center.
Though not dealing with any Cold War issues, it does perfectly capture that sense of constant danger and of someone always looking over your shoulder that was so important to that time.
