Review of The Conversation (1974) by Matt N — 17 Jan 2012
An intelligent dramatic thriller! The Conversation is a great film from master director Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. The Conversation incorporates the story of a man,Harry Caul who's business is spying on others and learning their secrets.
After learning of a mysterious secret during a conversation he tapped his already high paranoia level escalates. Gene Hackman delves expertly into the role and accurately portrayed a man suffering from paranoia, his fear of a home phone, constant locking of doors etc.
was great. This performance may match Hackman's Oscar winning role in The French Connection. The supporting cast was also great in the likes of John Cazale, an early and sinister role from Harrison Ford and the surprise appearance of Robert Duvall as the mysterious director.
This film was awesome, at first rather slow but once it gets going it is brilliant. The film's twist was also great I did not see that coming whatsoever, and the ending scene show Hackman truly become his paranoid character.
Pure genius and a classic movie.
