Review of The Conversation (1974) by Martin S — 20 May 2012
A real gem of a mystery thriller by Francis Ford Coppola, though it tends to be overshadowed by some of his other films like Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and it's sequel.
Along with it's clever plot, great piano soundtrack and slow, yet threatning pace, the performances by Gene Hackman and John Cazale (1935 - 1978) are superb. I have only one complaint, which has something to do with ending (and that I am not going to spoil for you); it feels a little too open-ended. It's not "wrapped up" in a way that feels suitable. It leaves you more to be desired. That's where you have the chance to rely on your imagination, however.
It is nonetheless a film worthy of standing in the spotlight together with Apocalypse Now and The Godfather! If Alfred Hitchcock ever saw it, i'm pretty sure it would have given him a big smile on his face.
