Review of The Conversation (1974) by Augusto A — 08 Jul 2009
Took me long enough to see it and I regret that. Very moody and almost noir-ish at times, a perfectly executed slow burn. A lot of filmmakers brag about their movies being character studies rather than plot driven endeavours, but most of the time that's just an excuse for poor storytelling.
Not here. This one's the real deal. I'm not too crazy about the dream sequence, though. It was way too cheesy, cliched and redundant, since it only serves the purpose of stating verbally what was already made perfectly clear in more subtle ways earlier.
It stops the movie dead on its tracks at the worst possible moment.
