Review of The Constant Gardener (2005) by Connor _ — 28 Dec 2010
With its wide shots of the African lands, close-ups of the leading couple in love, I initially thought that "The Constant Gardener" was going to be an art-house film with a mismatched plot. But the film rapidly grew on me as it progressed, and while it still was artsy and investigative, it was hardly mismatched.
Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes were brilliant, both so sincere and emotive. Awards overlooking Fiennes is a disappointment because I thought he played the grief-stricken husband with such nuance. The great direction from Fernando Meirelles, a perfect accompanying score, and yes those wide cinematographic shots and tender, intimate moments shared by the leads, make the film much humanly better.
