Review of The Constant Gardener (2005) by Briain D — 29 Aug 2011
This is a very good film, dealing with an important social issue and doing so with a strong storyline. Ralph Fiennes is superb (as always) and there is excellent chemistry between him and Weisz. The film is also beautifully shot in very authentic locations in Africa and we can see first-hand the suffering that the people experience there. This is obviously extremely effective and powerful. Also, Meirelles builds the tension superbly throughout the film and the viewer is kept very interested right up to the end.
There are weak points too. I think Huston's performance is less than adequate- he just doesn't come across naturally in his important role. Also, I think there is insufficient emphasis placed on the actual social issue involved. I think Weisz should have had a larger role in the film so the problems and crises in Africa would be vividly portrayed for the viewers. They clearly are the reason the film was made so they should be emphasised more.
However, overall, this was a film well worth watching and I would recommend it to friends and family.
