Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Rodney H — 06 May 2011
It was an interesting story, and the 9/11 parallels are well done, albeit somewhat heavy handed, but the film as a whole didn't come together as well as it should have. First: What was good? Robin Wright was excellent in her part, and it's a shame the film came out in the spring because she deserves award consideration.
Second, some of the supporting cast, such as Kevin Kline were very good. Mark Isham's score was fairly good (as always, but underused). Next, the bad: James Mcavoy, a very talented actor was pretty bad here.
Decent American accent, but beyond that, he just was not right for the part, and in a movie that relies on him so heavily that is not a good thing. Second, the production values. The costumes often reminded me of the crappy civil war recreations you had to watch in history class, and there were several moments with very obvious fake wigs and sideburns.
Also, the cinematography was distractingly bad in parts. Finally, the dialogue was just...bad. Overall, it told an interesting story, and kept me interested, but I just expected a lot more with the film's pedigree.
