Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Carla P — 24 Jul 2011
The Conspirator is Robert Redford's telling of the trial of those accused of killing Abraham Lincoln; by military tribunal, with no jury of peers and the prosecution running the whole show to exclude the Constitution, and yes, I had noticed the modern parallel.
Some scenes seem particularly like a play ("oh... someone is about to enter stage left..."), but the slow moving (by modern editing standards) suits a film set 150 years ago.
The performances are very good (if not great) and the atmosphere hangs heavily, sometimes too heavily as you gaze across barely lit interiors filled with smoke, but that is all part of it.
A thoughtful and well made film and if like me you like something to think about, certainly one to put on your list, although cinema or at home is up to you... I always prefer the cinema.
