Most movies about the Civil War fail to show just how divided the nation was and how close it was to dissolving altogether. This movies succeeds in placing you in the middle of a time when rebuilding our nation was precarious and dangerous. As someone who lives in DC, it was also amazing to see Washington depicted at that time -- and to imagine what it was like before the high security zone it is now.
The performances of McAvoy and Wright are complex and fascinating. Even though you know how it will all end, you can't take your eyes off them.
