Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Janie P — 19 Aug 2011
I have some mixed feelings about this movie. On the one hand, I appreciate Robert Redford's general faithfulness to the basic historical details in the story of Mary Surratt, but on the other hand, something felt really "off" about the way it was filmed.
Redford portrays Surratt as a much more sympathetic character than history suggests she actually was, but it is, of course, a movie interpretation. I think Tom Wilkinson and Robin Wright Penn gave my favorite performances; Justin Long was just a peculiar choice for such a serious movie, and Alexis Bledel was completely irritating.
