Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Matt A — 01 Sep 2011
What starts off as a quintessential film about the Lincoln assassination turns into a court drama about the trial of Mary Surratt, the woman falsely convicted for aiding the assassin of Abraham Lincoln, and attempted murders of Vice President Johnson, and Secretary of State Seward.
Redford makes a wonderful director and makes good use of a great cast. There is no absolution as to whether Surratt was truly guilty or not; he leaves that up to the viewer to decide. And in any biopic that is an intriguing aspect .
.. so that the viewer can research and learn more about the case themselves. All of the cast are good, but, of course, McAvoy carries the film and turns in another great performance. The film starts off big and then subsides in substance to a lull.
Nevertheless, it is a fascinating film that delves into one of the most interesting assassination plots ever.
