Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Ryan O — 04 Sep 2011
The Conspirator is the first of several films slated to be released about the assassination of President Lincoln. This version, however, tells the true tale of Mary Surratt, the only woman arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President. This is a story that is rarely told, but needs to be seen.
Robert Redford has fashioned a well made court room drama that features a top notch cast with an exquisite eye for detail. From the costumes to the sets, Washington D.C. has never looked or felt so alive during this tumultuous time period in American history.
At times, The Conspirator falls flat and seems to lose momentum in the middle section of the film, before finding its legs again. But this isn't so much a detriment as it is an observation.
I loved The Conspirator and I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in a different story about one of America's most famous Presidents. Well done Mr. Redford, well done.
