Review of The Conspirator (2011) by Tom R — 16 Apr 2012
An excellent historical drama. All of the actors play their parts with enthusiasm. Robin Wright is especially captivating. All the period details were perfect. I look forward to more great movies like this from The American Film Company.
Only thing I resented was Redford injecting his liberal politics into what is supposed to be simply historical. He bends over backwards to make Mary Surrat as sympathetic as possible due to her treatment by the authorities. Redford seems to want to equate Surrat's story with that of the treatment of today's enemy terrorists who are not citizens, which is ridiculous.
As far as I'm concerned, Surrat was guilty and deserved what she got. She was a Southern sympathizer and the fact that she didn't report the villains to the authorities while they were conspiring (especially after the botched kidnapping plot) clearly displayed her loyalties. I only regret that her coward of a son escaped the same fate.
