Review of The Conjuring (2013) by Martin A — 03 Jun 2014
I have seen this twice now, and I must say that I liked it better the second time around. On the first occasion, I was with other people, and they distracted me. the next, I was alone and could really pay attention to what I was seeing.
I found it to be much scarier than I originally believed and quite effective in the good old fashioned creep fest way I love so much.
I have always preferred ghost stories to the evil serial killer, evil alien, animal attack etc etc variety of horror. ghosts are, in fact, my very favorite, and this delivers in that area big-time. delightfully creepy. one of the best of the new crop of great scary flicks we seem to be getting lately. we appear to be moving away somewhat from what rolling stone once called gore porn, the bloody, "show your tits and scream" slasher flicks, and back to the classic horror which relies more on tension and suspense for its scares like hitchcock did so well, and I welcome it. even gorier outings like "you're next" manage to deliver genuine scares as well as the blood.
This is a new golden age for horror. I love it.
