Review of The Conjuring (2013) by Shawn H — 14 Jun 2014
When a movie is rated R just for scares, it better be really scary. Was it really scary? Not particularly. I was probably just disappointed due to the overhype, but it's still a really entertaining movie.
Old-school and effective. It reminded me of the extremely underrated Woman in Black, and that's a complement in the highest. It's about two paranormal experts who investigate a house with a long history of murder.
And I don't want to give anything else away. A great haunted house movie that is atmospheric and creepy all the way through. My only complaints are that Ron Livingston's character doesn't do much and the falling action seemed a bit abrupt.
But all in all, The Conjuring is a good Halloween movie that doesn't rely on found footage or hardcore nudity and gore.
