James Wan knows how to direct spooky and gleeful jump scares, yet in this thorough generic and mainly predictable horror flick they never hit very hard. The film is essentially just banging doors, claps, a few flashes of demon, and many incidences of 'quiet, quiet, quiet, BANG' for about 75 minutes.

The final act however is quite impressive, with the on screen scares and urgency upped considerably, and the whole shabang leads to a satisfying conclusion. The performances are strong all round, and considering that the film simply sets out to do something that's been done many many times before, it does it pretty well.

Just don't expect any kind of revolutionary horror that some people claim it to be.
