Review of The Conjuring (2013) by Graham B — 05 Nov 2014
Ed and Lorraine Warren are paranormal investigators called into a house where a family is being terrorized by a malevolent spirit.
This psychological horror film is quite bump scare unnerving in its set-up, but the creepy haunted house trope sadly descends into a silly exorcism movie with some awful effects.
It is "based on a true story", but it ends up being quite unbelievable and this basis just hinders it with a lack of stakes.
The cast does well with what it is given. It's not a bad effort from James Wan, but the second half of the film collapses the promise shown in the first.
