Review of The Conjuring 2 (2016) by Luke A — 05 Jul 2016
The sequel to the surprise hit, which turned out to be one of the best horror films of all times, is taking another actual case from demon hunter family Warren to continue the franchise. In some respects it follows the formula of the first film, but it never feels derivative.
The creators knew exactly which buttons to push and once again there are plenty of wonderfully old-fashioned scares and a really exciting showdown. Only the (rare) use of CGI is inferior to the power of dark corners, creaky stairs and demon voices.
It does not spoil this experience which, like part one, leaves you exhausted but happy you went for the ghost tour. Again, the film's biggest assets, besides the scares, are its characters and their actors.
Especially Madison Wolfe as the possessed girl is an absolute revelation. Great horror movies like this make an entire genre of stupid and unlikable teenagers getting killed one after the other obsolete.
