Review of The Conjuring 2 (2016) by Richard S — 06 Mar 2017
Horror sequels have a similar issue to comedy sequels. Comedy sequels tend to be missing the big laughs of the first movie and quite often horror finds itself struggling to scare the audience it terrified in the first movie.
I genuinely found the first Conjuring movie terrifying and so was looking forward to the next story which again focuses on Ed and Lorraine Warren's true life quest to help those who believe they are being targeted by supernatural forces.
This film focuses on two of the most famous cases that most people will have heard of. The first is that of the Lutz family in Amityville, a case which has long lasting effects on our central characters, especially of Lorraine.
The 2nd is set in England and follows the Enfield Haunting, a name which might not be recognisable until you see the photos taken at the time. There are genuine scares in this film, especially whenever we find ourselves in the company of Bill Wilkins, the previous tenant of Green Street, Enfield.
However, the film does move at a much slower space and about 40 minutes longer than your average horror which has positive and negatives. It means it lacks the fast paced scares of your average horror but there is more focus on character building and creating a decent story.
It's a difficult one to judge, I just know I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first movie.
