Review of The Conformist (1971) by Guido P — 12 Jun 2007
Few movies can combine a bewitching ambiance with a story of actual import. But Bertolucci achieves just this. Heavily stylized and gorgeously shot, this film is a grandiose spectacle about a man who will go to murderous lengths to achieve social acceptability.
The crux of his tragedy is, of course, that the fascist culture he means to integrate is hardly a good fit for his own personality; in short, he sins to join a people he does not even resemble and should, rather, be fighting against.
He is an outcast who wants desperately to stop being so. But one wonders if his efforts are not perhaps in vain...
