Review of The Conformist (1971) by Hanna R — 28 Sep 2009
A stunning cinematic masterpiece. The story of a man who shakes hands with the devil in his despair of trying to run away from his true self at any cost. But when his loyalty is put to the test, his conscience and ideals, will eat away at him little by little.
It's an absolutely beautiful film: the direction, cinematography, editing, acting, score and locations are all equally breathtaking.
Now I understand why this is considered among the best films of all time, maybe not for the story, since the protagonist is despicable and almost impossible to like, but definitely for it's cinematic mastery.
Ground-breaking at the time of its release and still controversial in its subject matter, great movie.
