Review of The Conformist (1971) by Frank J — 01 May 2012
No second is wasted in this impressionistic visual wonder. There's masters at work behind the camera - sweeping dolly shots, unusual cutting rhythm, sequences of dutch angles, stunning contrast lighting - all are filled with inescapable intention.
The story itself is a non-linear political psychological study - what makes a man turn into a fascist assassin and what happens to him when fascism fails. I need to watch this one again.
