Review of The Condemned (2007) by Deb S — 02 Jun 2011
Reality TV has become a huge part of the entertainment industry today and in this movie Austin stars as a man on death row in El Salvador who gets picked with nine other convicts and placed on a secluded and deserted island (with the exception of the promoters) so that they will do battle in a last-man-standing-type event for pay-per-view on the internet. (People get away with all kinds of sh*t on the internet, don't they?) The winner will get a hefty pay check and his freedom.
Donna Sereno: [TV interview] That means that kids can log on and watch murder.
Ian Breckel: Yeah sure they can, if they have a credit card.
A movie that does not pretend to be something else other then what it is a kick ass action film. Steven Williams Aka Stone Cold does the best he can do with such a clichéd character in his role as Jack Conrad bringing some bad-ass cowboy humor while Vinnie Jones in funny as hell but twisted at the same time.
Jack Conrad: Sounds like you've had a hard life.
Ewan McStarley: Yeah.
Jack Conrad: Good thing it's over.
~~~.
Ian Breckel: What were you doing in El Salvador?
Jack Conrad: Working on my tan.
Ian Breckel: Why did you blow the building up?
Jack Conrad: It was blocking my sun.
~~~.
Semi-spoiler: To keep the condemned "contestants" in line, each has a device strapped to an ankle, which has a timer on it so that unless the player is the winner, it will explode. It will also explode if the "contestant" strays past a border. It will also explode if the "contestant" tries to remove it.
