Review of The Company You Keep (2012) by Deborah S — 19 Apr 2013
I've always liked Robert Redford. I agree with his politics. This film reminds me alot of a few of redford's earlier film's that he only acted in particular - All the president's men and 3 days of the condor I love these two in particular because there are threads in this film that are related to his early film work from the about the early 70's probably into the 80's a little bit.
The performances are all great here with possible exception of Shia LaBeouf who I think stands out here in his role as the very enthusiastic newspaper reporter. I don't think he's even in the same class as alot of the great acting talent present here.
Particulary; sarandon, christie, cooper. It all comes down to this really - one person's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. There is also a generational thing present here as well. The scene between susan sarandon and shia labeouf is a great example of the younger generation having no idea how things went down 30 to 40 years ago.
The older generation telling the other that shit happens basically, you have a family and in redfored's case he grew out of the ideals of the weather underground movement. Use of stock footage I feel worked really well too.
All this tells me is that some people and countries never really change as the things the weather underground movement were getting militant about are still happening in the here and now.
