Review of The Company You Keep (2012) by David H — 13 May 2013
This is an interesting idea that is terribly executed. For starters, Redford is playing a character in his mid 50s with an 11-year-old daughter. Mr. Redford is more than 20 years north of his character and it shows.
My larger problem is the continuing reference to an incident "more than 30 years ago." The Weather Underground did hold up a Brinks truck in 1981 and a guard was killed. However, this was perpetrated by people who had joined the Weathermen in the early 70's when they were at their height and members were college kids. This would have made Redford's character in his 60's. More importantly, had this script dealt with the violence of the early 70's it would have had more depth and texture. Not to mention that Redford can still get away portraying a character of that vintage.
