Review of The Company of Wolves (1984) by Aidan S — 14 Dec 2006
A dark, macabre, more grown-up retelling of the story of Little Red Riding Hood. This lushly atmospheric film turns the familiar tale from fairy tale to gothic horror, and is usually successful.
Unfortunately, it seems Neil Jordan had a bit too muach of a taste for the surreal, as this film is bookended by rather silly "real world" sequences that establish it as a fever dream of the protagonist, and several elements from this said "reality" are rather jarringly incorporated into the "dream world," effectively destroying the suspension of disbelief.
Incidentally, this film contains the single ickiest werewolf transformation I've have ever seen. Eww.
