Review of The Company Men (2010) by Viccy K — 15 Jun 2011
Tommy Lee Jones and Craig T. Nelson are Gloucester ship builders. Chris Cooper was their master welder. Now they run GTX, a global industry, vertically integrated that really produces nothing except pushing paper from one place to another.
As with many industries recently, the bloom has fallen off the rose and they have to start laying off people, beginning with Ben Affleck, a smart MBA who was proud of having gotten out of Gloucester by way of B-school.
He ends up working for his brother-in-law, a construction worker, played beautifully by Kevin Costner. All the performances are low-keyed and well played. Everyone is forced to re-evaluatd their lives as men, husbands and family providers.
A very quiet movie that was much better than it was given credit for.
